Frozen Wild Blueberry Hot Chocolate. Just two ingredients: frozen wild blueberries and whole organic chocolate milk simply blended together for a sweet, chocolately, creamy dessert. Well, three ingredients if you go with the toasted marshmallow topping … which is highly recomended.
Another wild blueberry smoothie, you may be wondering? Yes, I had to. You see, we use wild blueberries in the majority of our smoothies (they’re one of our favorite fruits because of their flavor + nutrition AND because they grow naturally in one of our favorite places … Maine), and most of them are breakfast smoothies. I had to share THIS smoothie with you because it’s a dessert smoothie. A little bit indulgent, but still leans on the healthy side.
Have you ever had a frozen hot chocolate? Gosh are they good. Like a frappucino, but better. I actually cannot remember the last time I had one though, because they are usually packed with sugar, sugar and more sugar – enough to give me a headache. But … if you make your own, you get to control what goes into that hot chocolate. You can lower the sugar even more so in this Frozen Wild Blueberry Hot Chocolate by using whole milk and adding unsweetened dark cocoa powder and sweeten to taste. I opted to use my favorite chocolate milk.
This is an extra special frozen hot chocolate because it has the vibrancy and intense flavor of wild blueberries blended right in.
How did this smoothie come about? I’ve been on a chocolate milk kick. There is this Vermont company called Kimball Brook Farm that has the BEST organic whole chocolate milk. They sell the milk at Market Basket (the only place we’ve found it) and it sells out pretty much every day. When Adrian (he does a lot of our big shopping trips and I do the smaller trips) does his weekly shop there, he always checks if they have my “special” milk and snatches it up if so. Gosh is it good. I have a big glass of it most nights for dessert.
Anyhow, wild blueberries and cocoa/chocolate go really nicely together, so one night when I was craving my chocolate milk, but also wanted something a bit fruity and frosty, I blended the wild blues with my chocolate treat. Then I topped it with a few giant marshmallows and toasted them with my little kitchen torch. And this was the result.
This smoothie is rich in protein, calcium and Vitamin D from the milk and rich in antioxidants from the wild blueberries. In fact, wild blueberries have twice the antioxidant capacity of regular “cultivated” blueberries. Wild blueberries are so health promoting that emerging research shows they may play a role in gut health, diabetes, cancer and brain health. That’s good news for us wild blueberry lovers.
Wild blueberries have a more intense blueberry flavor than cultivated blueberries, as they grow wild in barrens and fields in Maine and Eastern Canada, and are genetically diverse, which gives them their complex tart and sweet flavor. The vast majority (99%) of Wild Blueberries are frozen (quick flash frozen) at harvest, locking in flavor and health benefits. So, when you’re looking for Wild Blueberries, look for them in the frozen fruit section of your local grocery store; look for Wild on the packaging.
