It’s no surprise that salmon is the #2 most consumed seafood in the U.S, behind shrimp and just ahead of canned tuna.  We love salmon for its taste, first and foremost, its versatility, but also its nutrient profile. Salmon is rich in protein and Vitamin D, but the fact that it is a nutrition stand-out is mainly because it’s rich in heart and brain health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids. Research shows omega-3s can reduce the risk of heart disease, depression, dementia and athritis and may even improve happiness.

The American Heart, Diabetes, Pediatric, Alzheimer’s and Psychiatric associations — and more — encourage the consumption of seafood at least twice a week (fish and shellfish). This recommendation is based on decades of research that shows seafood at least twice a week can lead to fewer instances of chronic and preventable diseases. And, seafood consumption is especially important for nursing and pregnant mothers. Both the FDA and EPA agree that eating fish regularly helps with the growth and development of children’s brains and even helps boost IQ.

How often do you cook salmon for your family? We eat salmon at least twice a week in our house. Lexi (1) LOVES it. She can easily eat 1/2 lb herself. She uses both hands to shovel the flaked salmon into her mouth. It’s actually quite a sight to see! Lucca (3) used to love it, but he’s been avoiding any type of fish, meat, poulty or eggs for the past couple weeks, not sure why. He’ll grow out of this phase eventually, I hope.

The majority of the time, we buy our salmon from our local fish market here on the Cape, called The Clam Man. We also always keep canned salmon in the pantry for salmon patties, which I make when we need dinner in a pinch and don’t have our fridge stocked with fresh ingredients.

We tend to eat salmon the same few ways every time we cook it – grilled or baked with teriyaki sauce, a lemon dill rub, a cumin citrus brown sugar rub, a blackened rub or a Thai peanut sauce. We love all of these flavors, but it was time to get inspired to try some new recipes. And since February is American Heart Month, I asked my Registered Dietitian friends to share their favorite salmon recipe. And I’ve shared them all here with you, because we all need some salmon inspiration. These salmon dishes are all healthy, flavorful and sure to be winners in your kitchen.

There are recipes for farmed/wild/canned/pouched salmon, so there’s something for everyone. And many of these recipes you could interchangeably use canned or fresh salmon.
